Super Mario Games for Wii U
New Super Mario Bros U
Released November 2012 New Super Mario Bros U is the fourth New Super Mario Bros title. Like the others it involved Mario, Luigi, Blue Toad and Yellow Toad in Princess Peach’s castle when Bowser and the Koopalings come to take over the castle and keep the Princess. It includes a new flying squirrel powerup and different kinds of Baby Yoshi’s. Powerups from the last Super Mario Bros game return (Fire Flower, Ice Flower, Penguin Suit, Propeller Mushroom (what we call Helicopter Hat) and Mini Mushroom. Another cool addition is Boost mode. While 1-4 players are playing with the characters with regular Wii remotes, another player can play in Boost Mode with the gamepad. They don’t control a character but can use the pad to do special things to assist the other players.
New Super Luigi Bro U
New Super Luigi Bro U game was released to celebrate Luigi’s 30th anniversary and is the first game that does not have Mario in it at all. In place of Mario is a character called Nabbit. It is similar to New Super Mario Bros U because it was originally a downloadable add-on for the game but now is sold with New Super Mario Bros U. In this version, all the levels have only 100 seconds but are also shorter than normal. The levels are different from New Super Mario Bros U but the map and enemies are the same.
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games Sochi 2014
The fourth game in the Mario & Sonic series this game is based off of the 2014 Olympic Winter games that took place in Sochi, Russia. It features winter sports such as skiing, figure skating, ice hockey, snowboarding and curling and different events use different controllers. You can unlock Mario and Sonic costumes for your Mii characters by completing certain challenges.
Super Mario 3D World
Super Mario 3d World is the seventh 3D Mario title released in 2013. The game starts off with Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach and Blue Toad watching fireworks outside the castle when they find a bent clear pipe. After Mario and Luigi fix it, tons of stuff comes out of the pipe including a Sprixie Princess who explains that Bowswer has kidnapped other Sprixie Princesses and she needs help. Bowser comes through and re-traps the Sprixie and disappears into the pipe. Peach tries to save the Sprixie princess but falls down the pipe and so naturally the others jump in after her and they end up in the Sprixie Kingdom.
The game includes the Fire Flower, Super Leaf, Boomerang Flower, Super Star and Mega Mushroom from past games as well as new Double Cherry (which doubles a player), Super Bell which turns the player into a cat and the Lucky Bell which is a cat that you can get coins and become a statue with. The player that is using the game pad can touch the screen for a bunch of special helps such as stunning enemies or collecting coins. As a bonus for the Year of Luigi Celebration mentioned above under New Super Luigi Bros U after the main game is completed once (or right away if you have Super Luigi U game data) you have access to a mini Luigi Bros game that is played in the 80s style.
Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze
This fifth game in the Donkey Kong Country series came out in February 2014 and is a sequel to Donkey Kong Country Returns. In this game, the Kong family is celebrating Donkey Kong’s birthday when Snowmads from a distant across the sea are accidentally alerted to the Kong’s whereabouts and they decide to take over Donkey Kong Island. They Turn the island to ice and snow and blow the Kong’s to another island, claiming Donkey Kong Island as their own. You can play as Donkey Kong, Dixie Kong, Ditty Kong and Cranky Kong who each have helpful abilities or tricks. A new feature, the Kong POW attack has been added. When 100 bananas are collected a Kong POW attack can be performed which turns all enemies on-screen into items (what item is determined by which character.)
NES Remix Pack
This is a combo pack of NES Remix and NES Remix 2 and was released December 2014. The NES Remix games are about completing challenges based upon early NES titles such as Super Mario Bros and The Legend of Zelda. The original was released December 2013 and the sequel was released April 2014.
NES Remix contains sixteen NES games remixed with new challenges. Examples include beating a stage from Super Mario Bros. backwards as Luigi, or playing Donkey Kong as Link. During each stage, the player is given a certain number of hearts as “life”; if the player dies at any point in the game, they lose one heart, and losing all of them results in a game over. After clearing each stage, the player is given a ranking of one to three stars based upon their clear time; if the player clears in a low enough time, the three stars become rainbow stars. These stars are required to unlock the Remix levels. – Mario Wiki
Mario Kart 8
The 8th game in the main Mario Kart series and the first one for the Wii U. It’s similar in some ways to Mario Kart Wii and Mario Kart 7 but different as well with the addition of anti-gravity and ATVs. The anti-gravity add in allows for racers to drive across walls, ceilings and other strange places. There are 36 characters that you can play as (some must be unlocked or purchased) but the new additions are the seven Koopalings (Iggy, Roy, Lemmy, Larry, Wendy, Ludwig and Morgon), Baby Rosalina, Pink Gold Peach (+ Tanooki Mario, Cat Peach, Link, Villager and Isabelle with DLC (downloadable content) purchase.) Besides the standard driving courses you can also play updated retro courses from other Mario Kart versions. There is more DLC planned including more courses and vehicles.
Super Smash Bros. for Wii U
The fifth game of the series was released for Wii U in 2014. Super Smash Bros is a “fighting” game with Nintendo characters such as ones from Mario games, Animal Crossing, Wii Fit, Pac-Man, Kirby and even Pikachu. Unlike traditional fighting games, you win by knocking your opponent off a stage. Instead of every hit taking HP away from them every hit ups their damage meter up to 999% which makes it easier to knock them off the stage. Players can try to jump back on the stage after being knocked off. Players can run around freely on the stage and use items to help recover or fight.
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
This is a puzzle game staring Captain Toad and Toadette. Super Mario 3D World had Captain Toad levels spread out throughout the game. This game is all single-player Captain Toad puzzles. A large bird named Wingo grabs a Power Star that Captain Toad and Toadette are trying to get. Toadette accidentally gets carried away while trying to stop the bird so Captain Toad goes on a mission to save Toadette. I don’t want to spoil the whole story but let’s just say eventually you get to play as Toadette as well. Also since this is considered a prequel to Super Mario 3D World at the end of this game, we see how Captain Toad ends up getting to the Sprixie Kingdom (see above under Super Mario 3D World.)
Mario Vs. Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars
This game was released in March 2015. This is the sixth Mario vs. Donkey Kong game but the first one on home console. This game can only be downloaded. The game has Minis (miniature toy characters) that you have to help reach a goal. There are more than 80 challenges. You can create your own puzzles as well and share them with other players. The game has stamps like in Super Mario 3D World.
Mario Party 10
The tenth Mario Party series game came out March 2015. Mario Party 10 has a Party mode and a Bowser Party mode where one player controls Bowser and you can play exclusive mini games. The game is amiibo compatible with special amiibo boards. If you aren’t familiar with the series, characters move around a board together in a vehicle, each taking a turn being the captain. Some spaces have special events that happen and mini games are played throughout. It’s like a board game with mini games with it. For the first time ever, Rosalina, Bowser and Spike will be fully playable (although Bowser will only be available in the Bowser Party mode.)
Sjuper Mario Maker
Super Mario Maker is different from all the other games in that it’s a game creator and allows you create your own 2D Super Mario levels. You can add items and enemies from the original Super Mario Bros wherever you want them. The game allows you to create boards from different versions of the game including Super Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros 3, Super Mario World and New Super Mario Bros U. You are able to share your boards online.
Yoshi’s Wooly World
Yoshi’s Wooly World which came out in 2015 is the first Yoshi game since 1997. Everything in this game is made out of yarn and similar materials which allows for some creative gameplay. Yoshi can eat enemies like usual but they are turned into yarn balls that can be thrown at enemies and objects with different results. There will be a cooperative mode with two Yoshis, Green and Red.
Look at all the great choices! Who knows what else will come out!
